For the past five years or so, my family and I have been on a mission. This mission was inspired when my son came home from school one day and decided that we were not doing enough as a family to help the planet. So my husband and I had a long conversation later about the fact that we really should start living a more sustainable and green life so that we can teach our children to do the same. To get to where we are now actually took us a good while, and we are nowhere near where we would like to be, but the first few things that we did really made a big difference and really helped to quickly reduce our carbon footprint. We started to grow our own garden, rode our bikes as a form of transportation, and made some changes to the utilities in our home for our first projects. -No one in our family really had a green thumb, but luckily a close friend of the family had his own garden at his home and he offered to help us out. We started out fairly small with only squash, tomatoes, garlic, and lettuce. Now we have even more variety in our garden, and we our eating organically and saving money too. -The bike riding certainly was not my own idea, but as a family we decided that we could cut out some of our unnecessary car travels by biking to the places we live close to. We were going to church that is just a couple of miles away from our home by car three times a week. Imagine how much we reduced our impact on the environment by trekking on bike there instead. -One of the last major changes that we made to create a greener home was to make some updates to our utilities and appliances so we were not being wasteful. We had a tankless water heater installed to eliminate all of that misused electricity. All of our kitchen appliances were pretty old, and they were definitely not Energy Star certified. After a brand new dishwasher, refrigerator, washer, and dryer, we were not only helping out the planet, but we were lowering our energy costs too. Even our light bulbs went from standard bulbs to LED and compact fluorescent lights that save energy and last much longer. -We love being a green family, and it is not as difficult as we really thought it was going to be. If you’re ready to take your family to a green level, then start out making small changes at first. After awhile, being green just comes naturally.
