It is never too soon to start teaching children about the environment, and how to look after it. Young children are naturally curious, and love wildlife and nature so going on an environmentally friendly holiday with them is a great way to encourage them to develop their curiosity and appreciate the world around them.

The popularity of eco-tourism has rocketed in recent years, and there are a vast amount of companies who specialise in “responsible tourism” all over the world. For example, if you don’t mind doing some work during your holiday, it is possible to take part in wildlife conservation projects from The Galapagos Islands to New Zealand, and there are also community projects available worldwide. These projects are great, but they aren’t always suitable for children. Travelling with children can be tiring and difficult so sometimes you want to stay closer to home, especially if you are looking for cheap holidays . There are options in every part of the UK, but here are just a couple:

Cornwall
Cornwall is one of the most attractive areas of the UK. With miles of sandy and rocky coastline, and a hilly interior, dotted with beautiful inland and coastal villages it is a great holiday location. There is a huge variety of accommodation available in Cornwall, but not all of it is eco-friendly. Particularly good eco-friendly options could be camping, eco lodges, or the amazing tree top campsite at The Mighty Oak . All instruction and safety equipment is provided and it is ideal for families. If you are looking for a campsite, then ones with naturally heated showers, or composting toilets are more eco friendly than big campsites with pools and bars.

North Wales
North Wales has amazing scenery. From the mountains of Snowdonia to the rugged coastline, and the quiet of Anglesey, there are numerous eco friendly holiday options suitable for children. The Centre for Alternative Technology offers eco cabins as well as courses suitable for teenagers and adults. There are also a number of stone cottages available for rent in Wales which take their water from natural springs. If you are a family who love outdoor activities then these are a great base for your holiday.

Eco-friendly Activities
Children need a lot of entertaining. Although there are many places you can stay that are environmentally conscious, you also need to consider the activities you do on holiday. Walking, cycling, and most outdoor activities are usually loved by kids, and they will probably enjoy it once they’ve got over the shock of leaving the playstation behind! An eco-friendly holiday is a great way to teach your children more, help the environment, and have a wonderful holiday at the same time!

Instead of running up your energy bill when you use hot water, you can use a new alternative method. Solar water heaters utilize the energy from the sun to heat the water. The initial price for a solar water heater is slightly more pricey than a regular water heater. In return, the purchase will pay for itself when you see the amount of money that it saves you on your power bill.

The newer solar water heaters are much more affordable than they were when the models were first introduced to the economy in the 70s and 80s. For a regular climate system, you can have a solar water heater installed for around $2000. To compare the savings on the electricity bill, the annual price for a solar powered water heater is around $50, while a regular unit will cost around $500 or more depending on the usage.

The basic method behind a solar water heater is it works as a pre-heater for a regular water heater. They also work well with water heaters that have a temperature adjustment option. Because the solar system works to pre-heat the water, the extra use of the regular heater is low, and in turn it will save you a lot of savings per month.

If you are considering installing this new solar option, then you will have an even better option with a roof that slopes to the South. This will also make the installation much easier and the product will run more efficiently. Most of the families that live higher in the North will use the solar product during the warmer months and then use the regular water heater when the season is the most cold.

Before installing your new solar water heater, look for a licensed installer and dealer who can help you design your backup system effectively. You can also inquire about their certifications and ask for referrals from previous clients. You should start the planning process of the solar water heater now. Most people forget about their water heating operation under the system fails and they are forced to get a new one. In turn, we wind up going out to the nearest department store and buying whatever we can so that we will have hot water. Instead, research the various solar water heater systems before your hot water heater fails. Find a system that will meet your lifestyle and your needs.

Keep in mind that normal water heaters will have a regular life span of around ten to fifteen years max. You should be prepared for the unexpected. Solar water heaters are not very difficult to find in our world today. Large home improvement stores now carry them as well as individual dealers. Make sure that you shop around for the best deal before committing to one style. The energy savings of a solar powered hot water heater will save you money not only annually, but in the event that the regular hot water heater were to fail. You can feel good knowing that you are saving money and that you are helping the environment.

At the heart of every home is the kitchen. We all have an image of a perfect kitchen, whether it be a minimalist vision in stainless steel or the romantic dream of a cat snuggled next to the Aga, a pot of soup bubbling on the hob and a cosy chair pulled up to the range. But, no matter what kind of kitchen you have in reality, there is one thing that it will have in common with most others – it is the location of many of the home’s most energy-guzzling appliances and some of our least environmentally friendly habits. So it is a great place to start if you are keen to go green.

It does not take much to make a difference – you could make big changes by replacing your appliances with greener versions or doing away with them altogether, but changing the way in which you use your kitchen is just as important, especially when it comes to water and energy.

Appliances

Most people’s kitchens in the developed world are crammed with appliances. Fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers, ovens and microwave ovens are common even in small kitchens for just one or two people. Obviously, they have become essentials for many of us and the thought of losing them fills us with dread and horror – so don’t worry, we are not about to suggest a return to the good old handwashing days of yesteryear. But the way in which we use our appliances and the type of product we buy can still have a massive impact on the environment as does what we do with them when they are no longer working. Of the over 5,000,000 tonnes of used electrical and electronic goods thrown away each year in the US, for example, large domestic appliances, such as washing machines, fridges and cookers make up 35,000 tonnes – 8 million units. So disposing of them carefully and preferably recycling them is a priority.

An average family concern for most is that of finances. When people think about budgeting and money matters they visualize check books, account statements, tax records, stacks of receipts, a calculator, and the like. The visual usually involves a lot of clutter and chaos and perhaps a stressed man or woman poring over their financials.

There are a lot of steps we can take to streamline and simplify our finance management for your family and many of these methods happen to be green too. Even paying our bills and managing our money can be hassle free and environmentally minded. Here are a few ideas to green your finances:

1. Manage your finances with budgeting and finance software for your computer for a hassle free and paper free option. Quicken and QuickBooks are two popular accounting programs. Microsoft Money can be linked to your online bank accounts and will pull transaction data directly from your banks upon request. This is a very handy feature. In lieu of fancy software programs you can also use a simple spreadsheet and there are many templates available online that are free and customized to meet the needs of finance management.

2. Request that your bank stop sending you paper account statements in the mail. Most banks now offer online reconciliation and account statements. Online statements usually go back up to six months and can be printed if you need them for any reason. Account statements can also be emailed upon request.

3. Request that your bills be sent to you electronically as well. Some companies may not yet offer this service but more and more are offering this every year. When the bills come to you via email you can just click and pay. The emails can be filed away on your computer if you need to refer back to them.

4. Get away from checks and snail mail by paying bills online, over the phone, or through monthly drafts direct from your checking account. These transactions are easy and waste free.

5. When online paying bills or making purchases, refrain from printing confirmations and receipts. Instead capture an image of your screen and the receipt using the control+alt+print screen function. Then just save the image as a .jpg file using a photo editor and file it on your computer accordingly. You can also keep track of what receipts you have and dollar amounts on a simple spreadsheet.

6. For paper receipts that you accumulate you can tame the paper beast by scanning them and filing them on your computer as well. You can also use a product called Neat Receipts. It scans, analyzes and organizes your receipts, bills and other papers and then sends everything electronically to a database on your computer.

Following the tips above will almost certainly reduce the amount of clutter and needless waste in your life when it comes to matters of finance.
